Teeth whitening may be requested for aesthetic reasons, for example in the case of age-related or lifestyle-related discolouration. Internal whitening may be suitable for an individual dark, root-treated tooth. Before treatment, we assess whether whitening is appropriate and what result can realistically be expected.
Whitening may be helpful for individual teeth affected by enamel defects or discolouration following root canal treatment. Internal whitening may be considered for a single dark tooth.

Tooth discolouration can develop with age or be caused by medication, dental injuries, tooth decay or a non-vital tooth. Surface stains are often caused by coffee, tea, red wine or tobacco. Before whitening, we assess the cause and your individual dental situation.
Before whitening treatment, we check your teeth and gums. Professional teeth cleaning removes plaque and surface stains first. This makes it easier to assess your actual tooth colour and helps the whitening gel work more evenly.
Teeth whitening uses preparations containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). They chemically alter the pigments in the tooth and thereby lighten them. We use different methods:
After taking impressions of your teeth, we make custom-fit trays. You wear the trays filled with whitening gel at home for around two hours. After approximately ten days, we check the tooth colour at our practice in Regensburg and can correct individual areas if necessary.
An individual non-vital tooth that has been successfully root-treated can be whitened from the inside. A suitable whitening agent is placed inside the tooth, which is initially sealed temporarily and later closed permanently with a filling.
During teeth whitening, active oxygen ions produced when the whitening agent is applied penetrate the enamel and break down the long pigment molecules causing discolouration. The resulting short, colourless molecules are then rinsed off the tooth surface by saliva.
The following applies to all the methods listed above: The whitening of the teeth does not last forever, but often for several years. The durability of the result depends largely on the quality and quantity of oral hygiene, the individual consumption habits (especially of coffee, tobacco and tea) as well as on the fact whether superficial discolourations are regularly removed in the course of a professional dental cleaning.
As soon as the whitened teeth darken in whole or in part, the bleaching can be repeated to achieve a new whitening. The bleaching trays that were made for the first application can usually be reused.
Preparations containing hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) are used for teeth whitening. They can penetrate the tooth and split off oxygen radicals there. These are able to chemically alter pigments in the tooth so that they no longer appear in colour. After taking impressions of the teeth and producing a model, custom-fit plastic trays are created. For teeth whitening, these trays are filled with bleaching gel and left in the mouth at home for 2 hours. After 10 days of use, we carry out an initial colour check and look at the results with you using the before and after photos we have taken. Depending on the result, individual discolorations can then be corrected.
We distinguish between medical and cosmetic reasons. Medically, whitening can be useful if teeth have become dark due to enamel defects or after root canal treatment. Cosmetic whitening is used to lighten the natural colour of the teeth.
So that we can see the actual original colour and the whitening gel can reach the tooth. Any build-up is removed beforehand so that the whitening can be more even.
